Welcome back to the Dojo! If you are just starting to explore artificial intelligence, you probably have one big question lingering in the back of your mind: "Is this actually safe?" If you watch the evening news, you might hear scary stories about AI "stealing data" or "knowing everything about you." It is completely normal to feel hesitant before typing your questions into ChatGPT.
But here is the truth: Using ChatGPT is very safe, as long as you know the basic rules of the road. Think of ChatGPT like a brilliant public librarian. The librarian is incredibly helpful and can answer almost any question you have, but you wouldn't hand the librarian your credit card or your private diary! Today, we are going to strip away the tech jargon and give you a simple, stress-free guide to AI privacy.
The "Coffee Shop" Rule (The Golden Rule of AI Privacy)
In the Dojo, we use a very simple test to decide if something is safe to type into ChatGPT. We call it the Coffee Shop Rule.
If you would not feel comfortable saying the information out loud to a stranger sitting next to you at a coffee shop, do not type it into ChatGPT.
It really is that simple! ChatGPT is a computer program designed to learn from the conversations it has. While the company behind it (OpenAI) has strong security, it is always best to play it safe.
🟢 The Green Light: What is 100% SAFE to Share
You can use ChatGPT for hours every single day without ever risking your privacy. Here are the things that are perfectly safe (and highly encouraged!) to talk about:
- Creative Ideas: 🤯Brainstorming recipes, planning a vegetable garden, or 📝writing a 🛏️bedtime story.
- General Work Tasks: Asking for help drafting a polite email 📨 to customer service or summarizing 📜 a public news article.
- Hobbies and Travel: Asking for a 3-day ✈️ travel itinerary for a vacation, or getting tips on how to fix a 🚱 leaky faucet.
- General Health and Tech Questions: Asking, "What are the general side effects of taking Vitamin C?" or "How do I make the text bigger on my 📱 iPhone?"
🔴 The Red Light: What to NEVER Share
Just like you wouldn't give this information to a stranger on the phone, never type these details into any AI:
- Financial Information: Never share 🏦Bank Account Numbers, 💳Credit Card Details, or 💵Exact Income Amounts.
- Official Identification: Never type your National Identity Number (like a Social Security Number), Government Tax IDs, Passport Details, or Driver's License Number.
- Passwords: Do not share your 🔑Passwords for your ✉️Email, 🏦Bank, or 🪪Social Media Accounts.
- Highly Sensitive Medical or Legal Data: Do not upload private 🩻medical records with your 🪪 name and address on them, or confidential 📄legal contracts.

Sensei's Pro Privacy Tips: How to Protect Yourself
If you want to use AI to help you with something specific, you can easily "anonymize" your information. This means taking out the private details before you ask the AI for help.
1. Use "Fill-in-the-Blanks" Instead of Real Names
If you want ChatGPT to help you write a cover letter for a job, don't give it your real home address and phone number.
- Instead of typing: "Write a letter from John Doe at 123 Main St, Delhi."
- Type this: "Write a letter from [My Name] at [My Address]." Once the AI writes the letter, you can copy it to your computer and fill in your real details privately!
2. Turn Off "Chat History & Training" (The Incognito Mode)
Did you know ChatGPT has a private mode? By default, ChatGPT uses your conversations to get smarter over time. If you don't want your chats saved or used for training, you can easily turn this off.
- On your computer: Click your profile picture at the Bottom Left > Click Settings > Click Data Controls > Turn off the switch that says Improve the model for everyone.
The Bottom Line: Do Not Let Fear Stop You
Artificial intelligence is the most powerful tool of our generation. It can help you learn new skills, save time, and explore your creativity.
You do not need to be afraid of it. By following the Coffee Shop Rule and keeping your sensitive numbers to yourself, you can enjoy all the amazing benefits of ChatGPT with complete peace of mind. Treat it like a helpful assistant, not a private diary, and you will be perfectly safe!
Congratulations! You Are Leveling Up in the Dojo
